A Multi-object Double Spectrograph for the Large Binocular Telescope
نویسندگان
چکیده
We are building a Multi-Object Double Spectrograph for the Large Binocular Telescope. The main themes of our planned research with the instrument are the formation and evolution of galaxies and their nuclei and the evolution of large-scale structure in the universe, although we expect that the spectrograph will be used for many other varieties of programs as well. The science goals for the instrument dictate that it have the highest possible throughput from 320 to 1000 nm, spectral resolutions of 10 to 10, and multi-object capability over an ~6' field. Our design is highly modular, so future upgrades (e.g., additional cameras, new gratings, and integral field units) should be straightforward.

An Overview of Instrumentation for the Large Binocular Telescope
An overview of the 3 facility instruments and 2 strategic interferometric instruments under construction for the Large Binocular Telescope is presented. Planned optical instrumentation includes the Large Binocular Camera (LBC), a pair of wide-field (25′ × 25′) UB/VRI optimized mosaic CCD imagers at the prime focus, and the MultiObject Double Spectrograph (MODS), a pair of dual-beam blue-red opt...

VIMOS (VIsible Multi-Object Spectrograph) is a multi-object imaging spectrograph installed at the VLT (Very large Telescope) at the ESO (European Southern Observatory) Paranal Observatory, especially suited for survey work. VIMOS is characterized by its very high multiplexing factor: it is possible to take up to 800 spectra with 10 arcsec long slits in a single exposure. To fully exploit its mu...
متن کاملSimulations for Multi-Object Spectrograph Planet Surveys
Radial velocity surveys for extra-solar planets generally require substantial amounts of large telescope time in order to monitor a sufficient number of stars. Two of the aspects which can limit such surveys are the single-object capabilities of the spectrograph, and an inefficient observing strategy for a given observing window. In addition, the detection rate of extra-solar planets using the ...

The Infrared Multi-Object Spectrograph (IRMOS) is a facility instrument for the Kitt Peak National Observatory’s 3.8 m Mayall Telescope and an engineering prototype for a possible design of the Next Generation Space Telescope/Multi-Object Spectrograph. IRMOS requires a toroidal, off-axis, biconic camera mirror (“M4”) on an aluminum substrate for near-IR imaging and spectroscopy. This mirror (sh...
